Statewide Partnership Steering Committee

This group meets quarterly, providing the Department of Education an opportunity to build community among its constituencies and partners. A number of policy recommendations have come from the Committee and others will be considered in the near future. Attendance at the meeting has continued to be excellent. Those attending have commented on the value of this opportunity to provide them information and an opportunity for input into the training efforts within the Department of Education.

Work Group on Transition

This work group meets quarterly with Mike Fahey from DOE as Chair. The group has had excellent representation from community partners. Transition issues are being addressed with an ambitious work plan developed that includes, developing a model for a "Good Transition Plan," piloting a transition booklet, and developing opportunities for technical assistance. Transition curriculums have been reviewed by the group. Other issues being addressed include military family transition, OSEP comments on transition parts B and C, problems associated with transitions of incarcerated youth and expanding transition resources across the state.

Work Group on School-Based Behavioral Health Services

TThis work group meets quarterly with Richard Hess from DOE as Chair. This group also has excellent representation from community partners. Because of the various barriers that have been identified in the successful implementation of school-based behavioral health services, the group is planning monthly meetings over the summer months. An item high on the agenda is to assure training for parents and families in positive behavioral supports.

Work Group on Standards and Assessments

This work group has met several times with Luana Nakano and Carol Watanabe from DOE as Chairs. During its recent meeting, an extensive discussion took place regarding the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards and the results of the initial statewide assessments and alternate assessments. Special presentations were made at each of the meetings by DOE personnel. Members of the group have appreciated the opportunity to learn more about what is happening within DOE in the standards and assessments arena. One area that has come for discussion is the importance of looking at the initial assessment process. Further meetings of this work group are pending the appointment of a new chairperson for the Department of Education.
